Following an announcement by the Austrian Ministry of Defence, in which they had a long list of criteria, engineer Gaston Glock, having no experience with firearm design or manufacture at the time, set out to use his vast knowledge of advanced synthetic polymers, to meet their needs.  Glock started by assembling a team of Europe's leading handgun experts to define the most desirable characteristics in a combat pistol.  Three months later he had the first prototype, the Glock 17, named for the company's 17th patent.  After those first Glock pistols outperformed 8 different entries from five other established manufacturers, the Austrian military ordered 25,000 units to replace their aging Walther P38 handguns.  That was the start of Glock's popularity and to this day Glock pistols continue to have a huge following.
