Commonly mispronounced by those unfamiliar with the German phonology, the correct pronounciation of Walther is 'Valter' (like Walter, Ws sounding like Vs in the German language). Walther was originally founded by Carl Walther in 1886 in Zellah-Mellis (what is now Thuringia), Germany. The company was destroyed in World War II, founded anew in Ulm, Germany in 1953 and now has headquarters in both Ulm and Arnsberg, Germany. Aside from Walther pistols, they manufacture many types of weapons including sport rifles, air rifles, submachine guns and a large line of tactical knives.
Some of the most famous Walther pistols include the P38, commonly carried by German Military in WWII, and the PPK and P99 which were both used by the fictional British Secret Service Agent 007, James Bond. The Walther pistol models PP (Police Pistols) and PPK (Polizeipistole, Kriminalmodell), were manufactured in .22 Long Rifle, .32 ACP (the most common caliber), .380 ACP and a very small amount in .25 ACP. They were also the first mass produced pistols utilizing stamped parts, but maintaining a high build quality. Because of the quality, in 1938 the German Reich chose Walther pistols to replace the P-08 Luger with Walther P38, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol weighing only 960 g. In 1993 the Walther firm was acquired by Umarex, who continues to manufacture under the Walther name.
With one of the largest selections available anywhere, Sportsman’s Depot, LLC carries Walther pistols along with many other top quality brands.
