Revolvers

Revolvers are a subset of the larger firearm category of handguns, which as the name implies, is a firearm with a revolving cylinder containing multiple chambers and at least one barrel for firing.  The two major handgun subsets include pistols and revolvers.  Revolvers distinguish themselves primarily by a separate chamber from the barrel as a revolving cylinder, as opposed to a pistol with a chamber that is integral with the barrel.  Sub-types of these two major categories can include pepperboxes, derringers, single shot, semi-automatic and machine pistols.  Though revolvers are primarily pistols, other firearms can be classified as revolvers, including rifles and shotguns.

The invention of the modern day revolver is credited to Samuel Colt and was named for its revolving cylinder with multiple firing chambers.  The cylinder is moved by the shooter manually cocking the hammer (single-action) or as the first part of pulling the trigger (double-action).   Also known as a “six-shooter” or “six-gun”, as 6 is the most common number of firing chambers, revolvers can have any number of chambers which require manual loading.

Some of the most popular brands in the revolver category are Charter Arms, Cimarron, Colt, Heritage, North American Arms, Rossi Braztech, Ruger, Smith & Wesson and Taurus.  With one of the largest selections of pistols available anywhere Sportsman’s Depot, LLC carries all of these brands along with many others.
